# Pricing teardown — claude.com (2026-10-13)

_Published 2026-10-14 via Cobalt Capture._

**Reviewing:** <https://claude.com/pricing>

## Summary

*A Cobalt Capture pricing teardown: an AI agent read the pricing page as a buyer and worked out what a solo user, a team of 5 and a company of 25 would pay. [How this study works](https://cobaltcapture.com/use-cases/pricing-page-teardown).*

**The price story the page transmits:** "It's $20 a month for me ($17 if I pay $200 up front), $20–25 a seat for a team, and if I hit limits I should pay $100+ for Max. But I can't tell how much I actually get for any of it."

**Buyer math**

| Buyer | Tier the page points to | Monthly | Yearly |
|---|---|---|---|
| Solo | Pro | $20 billed monthly | $200 billed up front ($17/mo) |
| Team of 5 | Team, Standard seats | $125 billed monthly | $1,200 billed annually ($100/mo) |
| Company of 25 | Team, Standard seats (Enterprise if they need SSO) | $625 billed monthly | $6,000 billed annually ($500/mo). Enterprise: $500/mo in seats **plus usage at API rates, cannot determine** |

**Findings, most serious first**

1. **MISLEADS / STALLS: usage is the product, and it's never quantified.** Every paid tier sells "more usage", "5x or 20x more", "more than Pro". The FAQ confirms there's no fixed message count, limits reset every 5 hours plus weekly, and can be tightened "at our discretion". The multipliers are relative to a number nobody states, so a buyer can't tell which tier covers their work.
2. **STALLS: Max 20x has no price on the card.** The card says "From $100" and lets you choose 5x or 20x. The 20x price isn't on the page you land on.
3. **STALLS: Team seat mix can't be planned.** Premium is "5x more usage than standard seats", again with no base number, so a team lead can't size how many Premium seats they need.
4. **STALLS: Enterprise total can't be estimated.** "$20/seat/month plus usage at API rates" is honest, but the usage half has no estimate.
5. **FRICTION: a news popup covers the Max price** on the desktop fold until it's dismissed.

**Keep list**
- Pro shows both prices on the card: "$17 … $200 billed up front. $20 if billed monthly."
- Team says exactly who it's for: "teams of 2 to 150".
- Enterprise publishes a real seat price instead of "contact sales".
- The FAQ explains how the limit windows work and what happens when you hit one.

## Desktop fold, default state (Individual tab)

FRICTION. Five-second read: three plans (Free, Pro, Max), Pro at "$17" with "$20 if billed monthly" right under it. Clear. But on first load a "Latest news" card sits on top of the Max card and covers its price, so the third answer (what does Max cost?) needs a click to dismiss it.

## Individual plans: what "more usage" buys

MISLEADS / STALLS. Usage is the thing every paid tier sells, and the page never says how much it is. Pro: "More usage*". Max: "Choose 5x or 20x more usage than Pro*". The FAQ then says there is "no fixed message count", limits reset on "a rolling five-hour session window" plus weekly limits, and Anthropic "may limit your usage in other ways, such as weekly and monthly caps ... at our discretion". So every multiplier is relative to a number that is never stated. A buyer can't tell whether Pro covers their day or whether they need Max. Also: Max says "From $100", and the price of the 20x option isn't on the card at all. Direction: give one concrete anchor per tier (for example, a typical day of work it covers).

## Team & Enterprise tab

KEEP, with one STALL. Team is honest and reachable: "For teams of 2 to 150", Standard seat $20 billed annually / $25 monthly, Premium seat $100 / $125, and Enterprise publishes a real price ("US$20/seat/month, billed annually") instead of hiding behind "contact sales". The stall is the same as above: Standard is "more usage than Pro*" and Premium is "5x more usage than standard seats*", so a team lead can't work out how many Premium seats they need. Enterprise adds "usage at API rates", so its monthly total can't be estimated from the page.
