# Spotify vs Apple Music: music streaming services compared

_Published 2026-09-06 via Cobalt Capture._

**Reviewing:** <https://www.spotify.com/us/premium/>

## Summary

**The short version: Spotify, slightly.** For a US listener who is not already living inside Apple hardware, Spotify takes the comparison by roughly 55 to 45 on the approved weights. It wins on the three rows people actually feel every day: recommendations that work, podcasts and audiobooks in the same app as the music, and a free tier that lets you find out before you pay. Apple Music wins two big ones and wins them cleanly: it is **$1 a month cheaper for one person and $2 a month cheaper for a family**, and its audio is better, with hi-res lossless to 24-bit/192 kHz and Dolby Atmos included where Spotify's lossless stops at CD quality with no spatial equivalent.

**What would flip it, and it flips easily:**

1. **Your household is all Apple.** iPhone, Watch, HomePod, CarPlay. Then Apple takes the ecosystem row outright and wins on points, while also being the cheaper of the two. This is the single most common reversal and it is not close.
2. **You can hear the difference, or you have the equipment to.** Hi-res lossless and Dolby Atmos are Apple, included, at a lower price. Spotify has no answer to spatial audio.
3. **You are buying for a family.** Apple's family plan is $19.99 for six against Spotify's $21.99, and it is a rare case of the cheaper option also being the better-specified one.

Official figures captured from each maker's own page on 5 September 2026. Market and independent figures are a September 2026 snapshot.

## The matrix

| Criterion | Weight | Spotify Premium | Apple Music | Edge |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Real price, one person | 20 | $12.99/month | $11.99/month | **Apple**, $12 a year |
| Real price, six people | | Family $21.99/month | Family $19.99/month | **Apple**, $24 a year |
| Discovery and recommendations | 15 | The reason most subscribers name for staying; algorithmic radio and weekly mixes are the category benchmark | Strong human curation and editorial radio; algorithmic discovery is the weaker half | **Spotify**, clear |
| Audio quality | 15 | Lossless since late 2025, up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC, which is CD quality. No spatial audio at comparable scale | Lossless ALAC on every paid plan, 16-bit/44.1 up to hi-res 24-bit/192 kHz, Dolby Atmos included | **Apple**, clear |
| What else is included | 12 | Over 7 million podcast titles plus 15 hours a month of audiobooks, in the same app | Music only. Podcasts are a separate free app, books a separate paid one | **Spotify**, clear |
| Ecosystem and device fit | 12 | Spotify Connect is the widest third-party device story: consoles, car units, other people's speakers, Android | Deepest inside Apple hardware (Watch offline, HomePod, CarPlay, Siri) and still runs on Android, Windows, PlayStation, Xbox, Roku, Samsung, LG, Alexa, Sonos | **Even**, and it is the row that decides the whole comparison for a given buyer |
| Free tier and trial | 10 | A permanent free ad-supported tier, plus 3 months free for new Premium users (offer ends 23 September 2026) | No free tier. One month free, three months with an eligible audio-device purchase | **Spotify**, decisively |
| Multi-device control and handoff | 6 | Spotify Connect: start on the phone, move it to a speaker or a console without touching them | Handoff is excellent between Apple devices, ordinary outside them | **Spotify**, slight |
| Lock-in, getting your library out | 6 | Neither offers a first-party export to the other; both need a third-party transfer service | Same | **Even** |
| Staying power in music | 4 | About 31.7% of the global market, and music is the whole company | About 12.6%, inside a company that is not going anywhere | **Even**, for opposite reasons |

## Critical differences, most consequential first

1. **The free tier is the only asymmetric one.** Spotify can be used forever without paying. Apple Music cannot be used at all without paying after a month. For anyone unsure, that is not a feature difference, it is the difference between trying and committing.
2. **Podcasts and audiobooks are one app or two.** If you listen to both music and talk, Spotify is a single subscription and a single app. On Apple that is Apple Music plus Apple Podcasts plus, if you want books, Apple Books.
3. **Apple is cheaper and sounds better.** Those two usually trade against each other and here they do not. The reason Apple does not simply win is that price and audio are 35 of the 100 points and Spotify takes 43 elsewhere.
4. **Spotify Duo is the odd plan out.** $18.99 for two people at the same address, when Apple's family plan covers six for $19.99. Two people choosing between those two products are being asked to pay almost the same money for a third of the seats.

## Not separating factors

- **Catalogue size.** Both claim over 100 million songs. Cut before the run began.
- **Ad-free playback.** Both, on every paid tier.
- **Offline downloads.** Both.
- **Student pricing.** Both $6.99. They differ only in the bundled extra, Hulu on Spotify against Apple TV on Apple Music, so the row is a coin toss on which television service you would otherwise pay for.
- **Platform availability.** The old "Apple Music is only for Apple people" line is out of date. It runs on Android, Windows, PlayStation, Xbox, Roku, Samsung and LG televisions, Alexa and Sonos.

## How this was run

Nine criteria weighted for a US listener choosing one music subscription, set before any capture. Each maker's own US page was rendered and captured, Spotify on desktop and phone, Apple Music on desktop, as the receipt for prices and plan terms. Prices are quoted from those pages as printed on 5 September 2026. Market share, audio-format detail and catalogue figures come from dated third-party sources, linked in the notes and marked as independent. No account was created, nothing was purchased, and neither service was used hands-on.

**What could not be verified:** listening quality is not measurable from a public page, so the audio row rests on published format specifications rather than a listening test. Recommendation quality rests on the weight of published verdicts, not a controlled trial; it is the softest row in the matrix and it carries 15 points, which is stated here rather than buried.

**Coverage gap:** both makers' pages scroll inside inner containers, so a full-page capture returns the fold. The plan grids were therefore read from each page's own text rather than shown in a single image. The prices above are the makers' own, not a third party's.

**One correction worth carrying:** most comparisons currently published quote $10.99, $11.99 and $16.99 for these plans. Those are last year's prices. Today's, from the makers' pages, are $11.99 and $12.99 individual, $19.99 and $21.99 family.

## The criteria, and how they were weighted

Set before anything was captured, for the default buyer: **one person in the US choosing a single music subscription, not already committed to either.** Nine rows, weights summing to 100.

| Criterion | Weight | Why it is here |
|---|---|---|
| Real price for your household size | 20 | The only row everyone pays every month |
| Music discovery and recommendations | 15 | The most-cited reason people stay or leave |
| Audio quality: lossless and spatial | 15 | The row that changed most in the last year |
| What else the subscription includes | 12 | Podcasts and audiobooks are one app or two |
| Ecosystem and device fit | 12 | Decides it outright for some buyers |
| Free tier and trial terms | 10 | Whether you can find out before paying |
| Multi-device control and handoff | 6 | Daily friction, invisible until you hit it |
| Lock-in and getting your library out | 6 | The cost of being wrong |
| Staying power in music | 4 | Neither is going away, but the shares differ |

**Catalogue size was cut to the not-separating list before the run started.** Both services claim over 100 million songs. A row that cannot separate the products is not a row.

Three questions would change these weights: do you live inside Apple hardware; do you listen to podcasts or audiobooks in the same app as music; do you have equipment that can resolve hi-res audio.

- Lossless launched **late 2025**, up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC, which is CD quality. No spatial-audio equivalent at Apple's scale ([HiFiWalker, 2026](https://hifiwalker.com/blogs/dap-guides-tips/apple-music-vs-spotify-a-comparison-of-audio-quality))
- Over 100 million tracks plus **more than 7 million podcast titles** ([FreeYourMusic, 2026](https://freeyourmusic.com/blog/spotify-vs-apple-music))

**WHO IT'S FOR:** the listener who wants one app for music, podcasts and some audiobooks, who values being handed things they did not ask for, and who plays to a mixed pile of hardware: a partner's Android phone, a games console, a friend's kitchen speaker, a rental car. It is also the only one of the two you can use for years without paying, which is a real answer to "how do I know I'll like it."

- Lossless via ALAC on **every paid plan**, standard at 16-bit/44.1 kHz, hi-res to 24-bit/192 kHz, Dolby Atmos at no extra charge ([HiFiWalker, 2026](https://hifiwalker.com/blogs/dap-guides-tips/apple-music-vs-spotify-a-comparison-of-audio-quality))
- Runs well beyond Apple hardware: Android, Windows, PlayStation, Xbox, Roku, Samsung and LG televisions, Alexa, Sonos (apple.com, captured 5 September 2026)

**WHO IT'S FOR:** the listener whose phone, watch, car and speaker are already Apple, who wants the best audio the money buys without a second subscription, and who treats their library as something they own and curate rather than a feed to be fed.

---

## A note on every other comparison you will read

Third-party comparisons published this year are quoting **$10.99 and $11.99** for the individual plans and **$16.99** for Apple's family plan. Every one of those numbers is out of date. The makers' own pages, captured today, say **$11.99** and **$12.99** individual and **$19.99** family. Prices in this study come from the captures above, not from other people's articles.
